Spiritualized - "Shine A Light"
Quite simply, "Shine A Light", is the most wonderful piece of music ever created. It may be found on the Spiritualized debut album "Laser Guided Melodies" (1992).
Those who have heard it will know what Phespirit means; those who have not MUST endeavour to do so. In the meantime, imagine if you will .....
The emergance from darkness of a gently lilting bass, guitars sliding in and out, airy vocals breathing sentiments bearing "something of love, something of despair" (to quote R Hunter Gibson's sleevenotes). Pressure builds as horns wash over the bass and pick up speed, poltergeists with feedback guitars slowly begin to materialise and circle the listener's head, swirling ever more frantically, increasing in fury, until ultimately exploding with the rush of an opened airlock. After several long screaming minutes atmospheric pressure is at last restored, enabling the listener to breathe again and enjoy a post-climactic cigarette lit by briefly-returning horns ..... before all fades once more to the dark. Magnificent.
For maximum appreciation, Phespirit recommends playing this track whilst sitting in a darkened room, holding a hi-fi remote control and steadily cranking up the volume in time to peak for the ear-bleeding guitar hurricane.
Lyrics
When I'm tired and all alone
Lord shine a light on me
and when I'm lonesome as can be
Lord shine a light on me
When I'm tired and all alone
Lord shine a light on me
and when I'm lonesome as can be
Lord shine a light on me
Lord shine a light on me
Lord shine a light on me
Lord shine a light on me
..... and as penned by Mr.Spaceman himself:
