Jarvis CockerEnglish Pop Star - [b.1963]Baby-BiographyJarvis Branson Cocker is born in the Sheffield suburb of Intake in 1963. Whilst still at school he forms his first band, 'Arabicus Pulp', soon to be renamed simply as 'Pulp'. Prior to Cocker completing his 'A' levels, the band are offered the chance to record a session for John Peel at B.B.C. Radio One. Cocker duly turns down the chance to study English Literature at Liverpool University in order to concentrate on music. In April 1983, Pulp release their debut mini-LP, 'It', on the small York-based Red Rhino label. The music press is unsupportive and Pulp spend the next five years on the dole, gigging sporadically with changing personnel. In 1985, Cocker falls from a third floor window and is confined to a wheelchair for two months; he continues gigging with the band, refining his on-stage hand gestures and head-twitching. In 1987, Pulp release their second album, 'Freaks', again without critical or popular acclaim. In 1988, Cocker enrolls on a film course at St.Martin's College in London. Here he assembles the band line-up with which he and Pulp will find fame. After releasing two well-received but poorly-promoted singles on Fire Records, Pulp sign to Gift Records. In 1992, the three singles are released ('O.U.', 'Babies', 'Razzmatazz') to great acclaim. They move to a major label with continued success. At the 1994 Reading Festival, Pulp play 'Common People' for the first time. In 1995, Pulp release 'Common People' as a single and the band finally achieve megastar status in the U.K.. The Mercury Music Prize winning album, 'Different Class', follows. At the 1996 Brit Awards, Cocker jumps on stage during a Michael Jackson performance, wiggles around, points at his buttocks, makes 'V' signs and runs off. Subsequently he is arrested and threatened with charges of actual bodily harm to three children who were on stage at the time. All charges are eventually dropped and Cocker emerges with a greatly enhanced public image. Post-'Different Class' and The Brits, Cocker is firmly established as a media celebrity and unlikely sex symbol. After a quiet period away from the limelight, Pulp return with the album, 'This is Hardcore'. It's sleazy title track is widely regarded as their finest work yet. Phespirit's Hero
