Phespirit goes to Iceland
Reykjavík     March 1996

In Iceland there is a saying that goes "if you don't like the weather, wait five minutes and it will change." Staggeringly, this proved to be correct as within two hours of touching down at Keflavík airport Phespirit had experienced calm and unbroken sun, sleet and slanting rain, gentle snowfall and howling blizzards, all randomly alternating.

Equally surprising was the discovery that at the first sign of snow the locals disappear indoors. Phespirit had naturally assumed that Icelanders would be a rugged, resiliant breed, barely noticing the occasional Arctic blizzard or three metre snow drift, but not so; the streets of Reykjavík are simply abandoned to the elements.

During a short but agreeable stay at the charming Hótel Leifur Eiríksson, Phespirit enjoyed sampling the local cod, the outdoor swimming pools and the ambience of The Pearl, but regretted not travelling to see Strokkur and Gullfoss, and not bringing home a stuffed puffin.
