Phespirit goes to Hungary
Budapest     November 1996

Phespirit resided in Budapest for one crisp and soggy November week. Here he saw glorious things: the Matthias Church, the Fisherman's Bastion, the Széchenyi Chain Bridge and the vast parliament building on the great River Danube. Here too he saw grim things: the pollution-blackened St. Stephen's Basilica, the bleak severity of Heroes' Square and reminders of war and oppression.

Mercifully, by the end of 1997, Western culture had still not excessively diluted the historic character of Budapest. Nonetheless, Phespirit was relieved to find the English language reasonably well understood, and that a ready supply of KFC Spicy Chicken would spare him the goulash experience.

Phespirit regrets leaving Budapest without trying out the Gellért Hotel Baths. Phespirit is always partial to a thermal bath wherever the opportunity presents itself but on this occasion somewhat negligently let the chance go begging. Reason enough to come back one day.
