Phespirit goes to Poland
Kraków November 2000
THE MARIACKI CHURCH Rynek Główny, Kraków
Every hour on the hour, a solo trumpeter begins playing Hejnał, then stops abruptly, recalling when a lone watchmen at the top of the church tower took up his trumpet to warn of Tartar invaders, only to be struck in the throat by an arrow. Nice story.
The nave of the Mariacki Church has the most beautiful stained glass windows.
THE SUKIENNICE
Situated at the very heart of the Old Town Square in Kraków, the Sukiennice was originally conceived as a vast cloth hall.
Now, as a covered market and art gallery, it is the place to purchase all manner of local tchotchka. Phespirit came away with some little painted boxes and half a dozen lead crystal vodka glasses.
PAULINE CHURCH INCIDENT
Bishop Stanisław of Kraków was stabbed, beheaded and hacked to pieces by King Bolesław the Bold, right here in 1079.
His body was cast into this basin in front of the church where the dismembered pieces were eaten by fish and then choked back up again for a resurrection (so they say).
Observe, his statue is there to prove it.
