AROUND MALAYSIA
The historic centre of Malacca is compact and easy to get around on foot. The only obstacle is the merciless heat.
St. Paul's Church, high on the hill of Bukit St. Paul, picks up what few breezes waft in from the Straits of Malacca. St. Francis Xavier was briefly buried here before being removed to Goa, and a slab in centre of the floor reports another cosmopolitan connection:
THIS SLAB MARKS THE GRAVE OF
FRAU VAN REIBECK WIFE OF JOHN
VAN RIEBECK FOUNDER OF CAPE
COLONY. THE ORIGINAL GRAVE STONE
WAS REMOVED TO CAPE TOWN IN
1915
Here was a colonial crossroads for the living and the dead alike.
