Phespirit goes to Thailand
Bangkok     April 2003

Map of Singapore

1 Bangkok

Phespirit never had to walk too far in Bangkok to find a liar or con artist willing to have him over. Invariably, the individual would have a tuk-tuk parked up nearby, ready to transport the victim to some discrete wallet-emptying boutique on the far side of town.

Phespirit was forewarned and thus not to be deceived.

Tuk-tuk drivers ..... the dregs of Bangkok.

2 Ayutthaya

This once vast amphibious capital city was abandoned after being captured and ravaged by the Burmese in 1767.

Over two hundred neglectful years later, it has become a superbly atmospheric collection of crumbling temples and palaces.

Wat Chaiwatthanaram is probably the best example.

3 Kanchanaburi

Kanchanaburi is where the infamous 'Death Railway' crosses over 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'.

Phespirit visited the War Cemetery and the 'JEATH' War Museum before taking a speedboat along the river to the bridge itself.

The modern bridge is made of concrete and iron and, thus, is very different in appearance to the bridge of the movies. The river too is very different, being much wider and not hemmed in by jungle, but together they look exactly right for this part of Thailand.

After walking across the bridge, back and forth, Phespirit took the 11:01 train from Kanchanaburi as far as Wang Pho, arriving 12:27, there to enjoy a nice meal before returning to Bangkok by coach.
