Phespirit goes to Austria
St Anton am Arlberg     July 2004

ULMER HÜTTE - 2279m

The hut is at the end of this road. Phespirit had intended to walk downhill to it from the Vallugagrat cable car station but found the high road to be snowed over and absolutely impassable. Instead he walked up from the Galzig station.

But even on this low road there were a few patches of summer snow.

St Anton am Arlberg, Austria: Ulmer Hutte - 2279m.

DARMSTÄDTER HÜTTE - 2384m

A long, high, hard hike brought Phespirit to this point - posing beside a cross in front of the Darmstädter Hütte.

The purpose of that 16' pole protruding from behind Phespirit is uncertain. Alarmingly, it gives this photograph the eerie appearance of a scene from "The Omen" .....

St Anton am Arlberg, Austria: Darmstadter Hutte - 2384m.

PUTZEN ALPE - 1726m

The walk from Nessler Alpe to Putzen Alpe was the most draining, spirit-sapping of the lot. Not due to difficult terrain or altitude but because it was an uncomfortably warm day and every footpath on the hiking guide map seemed to be marked in the wrong place.

There's no faulting the scenery, though.

St Anton am Arlberg, Austria: Putzen Alpe - 1726m.
