Phespirit goes to Serbia and Montenegro
Budva     September 2005

FROM THE CITADEL

The heavy walls that protect the old town of Budva join up to a stout sea-facing citadel.

This citadel provides a perfect platform from which to admire the town's little nest of red rooftops, the broad sweep of the riviera and the rugged limestone mountains beyond.

FROM THE SHORE

Sveti Stefan - a self-contained hotel 'island' on a stubby isthmus - is the hotel of choice for those pursuing the illusion of exclusivity and refinement on the Budva Riviera.

After walking around Sveti Stefan, Phespirit concluded he was better off in Budva. Sveti Stefan seemed isolated, with pokey central rooms, most of which have no view.

FROM THE LADDER

The two overgrown stone-built slopes in the foreground are two rungs on the old 'Ladder of Cattaro' that begins at Kotor and weaves its way upwards over the mountains.

Behind it, overlooking Kotor, is the Fortress of St. Ivan which, like the Ladder, has been abandoned to a sorry state of disrepair.
