Phespirit goes to F.Y.R. of Macedonia
Skopje     September 2006

STONE BRIDGE

Kameni Most (the Stone Bridge) spans the broad, beautiful, fast-flowing River Vardar. It has joined the old Turkish town in the north with the newer town in the south since the 15th century. Like the old bridge in Mostar, it became a target for shelling following the break-up of Yugoslavia. Unlike the bridge in Mostar, this bridge was badly damaged but not destroyed. It has now been repaired.

CASTLE BRIDGE

The Kale Fortress looks down on the Stone Bridge from the Vardar's north bank.

Here, standing by its entrance, Phespirit is not looking down on anything, but attempts to strike a convincing pose all the same.

CULTURAL BRIDGE

This is Sultan Murat Mosque. On the left is the clocktower - now without clock - and on the right is the minaret.

Phespirit was given a full guided tour by the enthusiastic Imam and then enjoyed a chat with a younger local man on topics ranging from the lack of modernisation in the north, to low income, to the E.U., to Chelsea F.C.
