Phespirit goes to Poland
Wrocław, Poznań & Szczecin     January/February 2008

NOON GOATS

Crowds gather outside Poznań's Town Hall at midday to watch two mechanical tin billy goats emerge from the clocktower and butt heads with each other twelve times.

A bonus on Sundays and holidays: observe the bugler who emerges to provide musical accompaniment to the spectacle.

Poznań, Poland: Noon Goats.

GREAT ESCAPEE

Phespirit's fingers rest upon the tombstone of Squadron Leader Roger Bushell, who led "The Great Escape" from Stalag Luft III and was subsequently murdered by the Nazis.

His burial place is the Commonwealth War Cemetery within Poznań Citadel, alongside many of his comrades; a true hero.

Poznań, Poland: Great Escapee.

ODRA FLOW

The River Odra - or Oder - rises at Oderské vrchy, the Czech Republic, and flows north for 854km, through Wrocław, into the Baltic Sea here at Szczecin.

The two distinct buildings in this picture are St. James's Cathedral (with newly restored spire) and the Pomeranian Dukes Castle.

Szczecin, Poland: Odra Flow.
