Phespirit goes to Georgia
Tbilisi     May/June 2008

UPLISTSIKHE CAVES

There are all manner of rock-cut grottoes at Uplistsikhe but this is the grandest - called Tamaris Darbazi, the 'Hall of Queen Tamar'.

The concrete pillars are not Bronze Age.

Uplistsikhe, Georgia: Caves.

GREMI TOWERS

Gremi was the first stop for Phespirit on his trip to the Kakheti region around Telavi. The tower on the left is a palace, the one on the right is the Church of the Archangels.

Visitors may only ascend the tower-palace, but good views work just as well in mono.

Gremi, Georgia: Towers.

ALAVERDI CATHEDRAL

This was Phespirit's favourite building in the Kakheti region around Telavi. The interior is tremendously atmospheric.

The exterior speaks for itself.

Alaverdi, Georgia: Cathedral.
