Phespirit's trip to Trieste came thirteen and a half months after his trip to Szczecin - German name: Stettin. The "iron curtain" is long gone but the two cities remain connected by its infamy, centuries of lively history, and their individual long-faded glories.
Having anticipated that Szczecin would be grim and Trieste would be glamorous Phespirit found neither stereotype to be accurate. It is what he enjoys most about travelling - the alternative truths.
Phespirit boarded the 08:56 train from Trieste, arriving in Udine at 10:04. He walked up Via Aquileia to Piazza della Libertà where he spent some time appreciating the bright attractive square, with its quirky elegant architecture and intimate appeal, before heading up the adjacent hill to the Castello.
Clean green space on the hilltop, with snow-capped mountains on the horizons, makes the Castello a pleasant spot to relax. Moving on though: to Duomo, San Francesco, Piazza Giacomo Matteotti, and then passing by San Giacomo and Palazzo Antonini to reach Galleria d'Arte Moderna. Finally back to Piazza della Libertà, and down Via Dante towards the station for the 15:56 back to Trieste.
A grand day out.
