Kaunas stands where the River Neris (from the east, passing over the north of the city) meets the River Nemunas (arriving from the south and continuing westward).
This is the confluence: Nemunas on the left and Neris on the right.

Laisvės alėja - 'Liberty Avenue' - is a 1.6km pedestrianised avenue that leads east-west through the heart of new Kaunas.
This double row of trees runs its full length, laying down a golden carpet in autumn.

Phespirit stands before the memorial to the victims of Fascism at the Ninth Fort. It was created by sculptor Alfonsas Ambraziūnas, and raised up here in 1984. Standing at an awe-inspiring 32m high, it symbolises pain, sorrow, tortures and eternal remembrance.
