AROUND GREECE

Map of Greece

1 Athens

Phespirit visited numerous museums and galleries in Athens. The pick of the bunch were:

  • National Archaeological Museum
  • Acropolis Museum
  • Goulandris Museum of Cycladic and Ancient Greek Art
  • Benaki Museum
  • Frissiras Museum

Mycenae tomb gold and the bronze and marble sculptures at the National Archaeological Museum are outstanding. Phespirit spent more than three hours admiring them without noticing the time.

The Frissiras Museum stood out for showing that rarest of things, a commendable collection of contemporary paintings. Take a bow Giorgos Rorris, Achilleas Pistonis and Stefanos Daskalakis.

2 Cape Soúnio

Maybe it was the low season for tourism. Maybe potential tourists had been influenced by grim economic reporting and were actively avoiding Greece. Maybe it was the powerful winds and heavy grey skies. Whatever the reason, the magnificent remains of the white marble Temple of Poseidon were all but deserted.

At times Phespirit was all alone at a site that normally would have been heaving with people.

He wasn't complaining one bit.

3 Marathon

Phespirit spent a full four hours peregrinating on foot between the sights of Marathon. He visited: the site of the Trophy of the Battle of Marathon; the earth dome that is the Tumulus of the Athenians; the Early Helladic Tumuli; and finally, the archaeological museum next to the Middle Helladic Tombs.

Walking time: three hours; sightseeing: fifty minutes; waiting for a bus back to Athens: ten minutes.
